Windows 10 Feature UpdatesUpdate Being Applied on Friday Nights

SOMTech is deploying Windows 10 Feature Updates via MECM through September and October. These updates are larger than standard updates and are not pushed out during the same cycle. They do require a reboot which will happen automatically after the update is installed. During testing, the only negative impact we saw for users was downtime and the automatic reboot. This update should not impact most laptops as they will be updated manually later on.

For more details about this process and a schedule for when your department will be affected, please visit https://go.vcu.edu/SOMPatching.

SOMTech Encryption UpdateUpdates with Reboots Happening this Weekend

In preparation for upcoming Operating System updates, SOMTech is pushing out an updated version of the Dell External Media Encryption software (which manages flash drive encryption) to Windows desktops this weekend. This upgrade is strictly for compatibility purposes and does not change the way encryption works. Due to the way the software interacts with the system, a reboot is required and will be enforced. When you leave on Friday, please be sure to save any opened documents and leave your computer turned on.

The software will be installed between 10PM and 4AM on the night of Saturday, July 18th. If you have any concerns with this schedule, please email SOMTech@vcuhealth.org.

SOMTech NotificationWindows Updates for February and Encryption Upgrade

As described on https://go.vcu.edu/SOMPatching, SOMTech has implemented a patching system to help ensure that all Windows computers are installing updates per the VCU Security Standard.

The Windows Updates for February are ready to be installed. To manually install these updates, please follow the instructions at https://go.vcu.edu/SOMPatching. If updates are not installed manually, an automatic reboot will occur around 10PM on Thursday, February 28th.

SOMTech is also pushing out an updated version of the Dell External Media Encryption client around this same time. In some situations a reboot may be required in order to continue using encrypted flash drives after this update, so if you receive an error about opening files on flash drives, please try rebooting before submitting a ticket to SOMTech at https://go.vcu.edu/SOMTicket. This upgrade is strictly for compatibility purposes and does not change the way encryption works.
